Prerequisites

Credentials prove your commitment. Join the thousands of professional sailing educators who have proven they measure up to the standards used by the American commercial sailing industry. You may enroll in an IQC if you have the ambition to become classified as a professional sailing instructor, and you meet the following criteria:

ASA Small Boat (210) Instructor

ASA member in good standing
18 years of age or older
Possess at least 3 years sailing experience
Have teaching experience or can demonstrate an aptitude for clearly communicating sailing concepts to the novice sailor
Have current CPR/First Aid Certification
Capable of performing the standards described in the ASA International Log Book

ASA Small Boat (209) Assistant Instructor

ASA member in good standing
14 years of age or older
Possess sailing experience
Have current CPR/First Aid Certification
No teaching experience required

ASA Keelboat (201) Instructor

ASA member in good standing
18 years of age or older
Possess at least 3 years sailing experience
Have teaching experience or can demonstrate an aptitude for clearly communicating sailing concepts to the novice sailor
Capable of performing the standards described in the ASA International Log Book

ASA Basic Coastal Cruising (203) Instructor

Prerequisites:

Basic Keelboat Sailing Instructor

Requirements:

Successful completion of the Basic Coastal Cruising Instructor Qualification Clinic

Authorized to Certify:

Basic Coastal Cruising (Student Level)
Basic Keelboat Sailing (Student Level)

ASA Bareboat Chartering (204) Instructor
(Intermediate Coastal Cruising)

Prerequisites:

Basic Coastal Cruising Instructor

Requirements:

Successful completion of the Bareboat Chartering Instructor Qualification Clinic

Authorized to Certify:

Bareboat Chartering (Student Level)
Basic Coastal Cruising (Student Level)
Basic Keelboat Sailing (Student Level)

ASA Coastal Navigation (205) Instructor

Prerequisites:

Basic Coastal Cruising Instructor

Requirements:

Scoring 90% or better on the Coastal Navigation Examination

Authorized to Certify:

Coastal Navigation (Student Level)
Basic Coastal Cruising (Student Level)
Basic Keelboat Sailing (Student Level)

ASA Advanced Coastal Cruising (206) Instructor

Prerequisites:

20 years of age (minimum)
One year teaching experience as an ASA Basic Coastal Cruising Instructor
Bareboat Chartering Instructor
Coastal Navigation Instructor

Requirements:

Successful completion of Advanced Coastal Cruising Instructor Qualification Clinic

Authorized to Certify:

Advanced Coastal Cruising (Student Level)
Coastal Navigation (Student Level)
Bareboat Chartering (Student Level)
Basic Coastal Cruising (Student Level)
Basic Keelboat Sailing (Student Level)

ASA Celestial Navigation (207) Instructor

Prerequisites:

Bareboat Chartering Instructor

Requirements:

Scoring 90% or better on the Celestial Navigation Examination

Authorized to Certify:

Celestial Navigation (Student Level)
Bareboat Chartering (Student Level)
Basic Coastal Cruising (Student Level)
Basic Keelboat Sailing (Student Level)

ASA Offshore Passagemaking (208) Instructor

Prerequisites:

25 years of age (minimum)
Celestial Navigation Instructor
Advanced Coastal Cruising Instructor
300 hours teaching experience as Advanced Coastal Cruising Instructor
Skipper a sailing vessel on a 1000 NM (minimum) offshore passage
Approval of ASA Review Board

Requirements:

Successful completion of an Offshore Passagemaking Instructor Qualification Clinic

Authorized to Certify:

All Keelboat Student Levels

ASA Trailerable Multihull (213) Instructor

Prerequisites:

Successful completion of Basic Coastal Cruising Instructor Qualification Clinic

Requirements:

Successful completion of Trailerable Multihull Instructor Qualification Clinic

Authorized to Certify:

Trailerable Multihull Sailing (Student Level)

ASA Cruising Catamaran (214) Instructor

Prerequisites:

Successful completion of Bareboat Charter Instructor Qualification Clinic

Requirements:

Successful completion of Cruising Catamaran Instructor Qualification Clinic

Authorized to Certify:

Cruising Catamaran (Student Level)
